Do Something 101
More than 13 million kids cannot afford basic school supplies for back to school. For the third year, DoSomething.org, a national non-profit organization, is engaged in motivating teens (13-19) to get involved, take action and “do something” to help their fellow teens succeed in school.
With help from Twilight’s Nikki Reed, DoSomething.org and Staples will arm youth and teens with the tools and resources they need to make a difference in their community this summer. Teens are encouraged to collect school supplies to ensure they get into the hands of thousands of deserving kids just in time to head back to school. All school supplies will be donated locally to educational and not-for-profit organizations that serve disadvantaged youth. Hi, I’m Nikki Reed from Twilight. We all know going back to school after summer vacation is tough. Now imagine being the only one without a pencil or a notebook. Not fun. So Do Something about it!
This summer, join Do Something 101 to help students start the year off right.
Collect new binders, pens, notebooks. Anything that teens need.
Drop off school supplies at Do Something 101 collection sites at Staples stores nationwide. Go to DoSomething101.org to get started today.

Lawn Mower Safety, Summer 2010
Did you know that 68,000 people get lawn mower injuries each year? More than 9,000 of those injuries affect people under 18. The Pennsylvania Division of the American Trauma Society reminds you to be safe while mowing the lawn. While on a riding mower, never allow children to be passengers. Injuries usually involve children falling off someone’s lap. Never leave a mower unattended while it’s running. Remember that young children should never operate a lawn mower and should be at least 16 before operating a riding mower. Keep your family safe this summer. For more information on lawn mower safety, please call the American Trauma Society at 1-800-822-2358.

Heat Stroke, Summer 2010
Heat stroke is a serious condition that has both physical and neurological symptoms that could result in death. The body temperature rises over 104 degrees, and there may be difficulty breathing, confusion, and even hallucinations. During these hot, summer months, heat stroke is a subject you should know about. The Pennsylvania Division of the American Trauma Society reminds you to limit strenuous outdoor activity to mornings and evenings during hot and humid days. Also, drink water or sports drinks before exercise or sports activities, and wear lightweight clothing. Stay cool and safe this summer. For more information on heat strokes, please call the American Trauma Society at 1-800-822-2358.

Bicycle Safety, Summer 2010
Did you know that wearing a helmet reduces risk of death by more than 50 percent? It’s no secret that not wearing a helmet is dangerous, but during these active summer months, it could turn tragic. So before you leave for your next bike ride, the Pennsylvania Division of the American Trauma Society reminds you to take time out for safety. Make wearing a helmet mandatory, not just for your kids, but for you too. Make sure your helmet covers your forehead and fits snugly and securely. The helmet should not be able to move from side to side or front to back. For more information on bike safety or helmets, please call the American Trauma Society at 1-800-822-2358.

Ligonier Highland Games
For more than 50 years, the skirl of the bagpipes has drawn those of Celtic descent – and those who appreciate the Celtic culture – to the beautiful woods in Ligonier, Pennsylvania. The event offers a piping contest, open to the public, on Friday, September 10, at the Four Points Sheraton. Then, on Saturday, September 11, more than 10,000 will gather to celebrate Scottish traditions including competition piping, fiddling, and drumming; athletic events including tossing the caber and the Scottish hammer throw; Highland dancing and Scottish country dancing; and a living history demonstration of the Scottish military. At 12:00 noon, welcoming ceremonies will feature performances by the Massed Bands (all competition and demonstration pipe and drum groups). Part of the day’s festivities will be an appearance by the Lord Lyon, the Chief Herald of Scotland to Queen Elizabeth II, the oldest heraldic office in existence. Visitors will also enjoy musicians from all over the world, Scottish breed dog exhibits, and the timeless tradition of Gaelic Mod, a competition involving Scottish Gaelic prose, poetry, and song. Vendors display Celtic wares including pottery, jewelry, tartans, Scottish food, and, of course, kilts! Regional clans host tents that allow visitors to explore the history and legend of each family group. The Games begin at 9:00 am and will conclude at 6:00 pm. This event allows those of Scottish heritage – and those who appreciate that heritage – to experience many facets of the Celtic culture. The Games will culminate with a traditional Ceilidh (a traditional Gaelic social dancing and dining event) at the Millcreek in Ligonier. ADMISSION:
Adults: $18.00 Seniors: $15 (55 and over)
Children (9-15): $8.00 Children under 9: FREE
