Each year, the Ligonier Highland Games are held at Idlewild Park on Route 30 in Ligonier, PA. In years past, the Games have been hosted the Saturday after Labor Day. In 2012, the Games will be held two weekends later. The date was changed to accommodate the Park’s extension of its 2012 season to September 15th. As the Games utilize the entirety of the Idlewild grounds, it was not possible to keep the traditional weekend for the Games. Therefore, the Ligonier Highland Games welcomes everyone to this celebration of all things Scottish on the new date of September 22, 2012. The Games begin at 9:00 am; the gates open at 8:00 am. More details are available at www.ligonierhighlandgames.org.
This annual gathering of the Clans allows everyone to appreciate such Scottish traditions as piping and drumming, tossing the caber and the Scottish hammer throw, Highland and Scottish country dancing, and fiddling and storytelling. Each year, thousands experience a living military history demonstration, Scottish breed dog exhibits, and the timeless tradition of Gaelic Mod, a competition involving Scottish Gaelic prose, poetry, and song. More than 20 vendors display Celtic wares including pottery, Irish and Scottish music, Scottish food, and, of course, kilts! You can learn about the heritage of the historical families of Scotland at the Clan tents. From 9:00 am until 6:00 p, the Ligonier Highland Games are a fun, family-friendly event that allows everyone to be Scottish for a day! A portion of the ticket proceeds goes to support the scholarship funds of the Clan Donald Educational and Charitable Trust. Please note that no rides or attractions are open at the park during the Games. After the Games on the 22nd, there will be a traditional dinner, the Ceilidh, which is a separate ticket.
